I am constantly in search of electric football ‘artifacts’ to include in the collection of the Museum. I recently came across this listing on eBay of a game that I did not know even existed. I had never heard of its existence and certainly had never seen even a picture of one.
Excalibur Electronics is the company that was granted the NFL License for electric football when it was not renewed with Miggle Toys / Tudor Game in 2007. it was the first time in 50 years (since 1967) that Tudor / Tudor Games had not held the NFL license for electric football.
The game that Excalibur came out with was called NFL Vibrating Football.
Excalibur held the NFL License for at least 3 years, until 2010, at least, I have never seen one produced after that.
The larger size Excalibur NFL Vibrating Football Game (model NF-07) was available through JC Penney with a 27″ x 16″ playing field. They also sold a smaller version (model NF-08) with a 20 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ playing field. This smaller size was also sold through Toys R Us under their Pavillion Brand.
What is unique about this game set is that in comes in an exclusive ESPN “VINTAGE IS GREAT” box and includes a special “ESPN MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL / ESPN COLLEGE FOOTBALL” graphics package. The figures are the standard generic “red” and “blue ” figures with the standard accessories.
I paid $145 for this game set that includes the asking price of $99 + shipping and taxes. In my opinion, a very reasonable price to pay for this item since it is an original and in near mint condition. If I had to put another value on this item, I would estimate it at a $500 minimum. Of course, the actual value of anything is what someone else is willing to pay for something at any given time and any given day.
This item is going into the permanent collection of the Museum never to be sold again. At, least not in my lifetime and as long as I am in charge of the museum.
